In my mind, the only real downside to Alice is that a student can't easily add their own artwork or objects. Alice comes with a plethora of objects, and you can download more from the Internet, but it isn't quite the same, and I thought that for elementary school children, animating your own artwork would be important.
However, if you are teaching older students, I would highly recommend looking into this.
